Met Gala 2024 Highlights

Met Gala 2024: The Garden of Time
The 2024 Met Gala celebrated 'The Garden of Time,' inspired by J.G. Ballard's short story exploring themes of beauty, impermanence, and the passage of time through fashion.
Exhibition Concept
The Costume Institute's exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton with creative direction from film director Luca Guadagnino, presented garments chronologically in reverse—beginning with futuristic designs and concluding with historical artifacts, creating a meditation on fashion's relationship with temporality.
Red Carpet Standouts
Red carpet highlights featured technical innovation and artistic collaboration:
- Zendaya's structural Iris van Herpen creation featuring digitally-printed fabric that gradually shifted color throughout the evening
- First-time attendee Barry Keoghan in Alexander McQueen's botanical-inspired tailoring with three-dimensional embroidery
- Cynthia Erivo wearing Thom Browne's mechanical dress that gradually bloomed during her red carpet appearance
Botanical Collaborations
Designer Tory Burch presented an unexpected collaboration with horticultural artist Azuma Makoto, incorporating living botanical elements into her designs that responded to body temperature and movement.
"This exhibition asks us to consider not just what we wear, but how garments witness and measure our passage through time." — Andrew Bolton, Curator
